Solo female travel
in South America.
From the safe streets of Chile and Uruguay to Machu Picchu, the Galápagos, and the Amazon. 12 countries with honest safety ratings and practical advice for traveling Latin America with confidence.
South America: adventure with awareness.
South America is one of the most rewarding continents for solo female travel, but it also demands more street-smart awareness than Europe or North America. The rewards — Machu Picchu, Patagonia, the Galápagos, Carnival, Cartagena — are genuinely extraordinary. The risks are real but manageable with the right preparation.
Chile and Uruguay sit at a different level from the rest of the continent. Both have relatively low crime, good infrastructure, and genuinely progressive societies. Argentina is close behind in cultural terms, with Buenos Aires being one of the great solo travel cities, though pickpocketing and economic instability require awareness.
Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Brazil are all very doable for experienced solo travelers who stay in tourist areas, use registered operators and taxis, and apply basic urban common sense. The key rule across the continent: stay in well-lit areas at night, use app-based or hotel-recommended transport, and keep valuables discreet. Venezuela is the one country to avoid entirely — the combination of political collapse and violent crime makes it genuinely dangerous.
🏛 Ancient civilisations
Machu Picchu, the Nazca Lines, Tiwanaku, and countless colonial cities built on Incan foundations. South America's ancient heritage is unmatched in the Americas.
🏭 Passionate Latin culture
Tango in Buenos Aires, Carnaval in Rio, salsa in Cali, mate culture in Uruguay. The continent's warmth and energy are part of what makes it worth the extra preparation.
🗺 Street-smart travel essential
Urban awareness, app-based taxis, avoiding certain neighbourhoods, and keeping valuables out of sight are standard practice across most of the continent.
🌿 Extraordinary natural diversity
Patagonian glaciers, Amazon rainforest, Andean altiplano, Atlantic beaches, and Galápagos wildlife. Few continents offer this range in one trip.
South America by region
Safety varies significantly across the continent — from near-European standards in the south to genuine caution required in the north.
Southern Cone
The safest part of South America by a clear margin. Chile and Uruguay have European-level infrastructure and low crime. Argentina is close behind with excellent culture and moderate urban risks.
Andean countries
Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia offer incredible cultural and natural experiences. Tourist zones are well-established and accessible. Urban areas outside tourist centres require more care.
Brazil
The world's most famous Carnival, stunning beaches, and the Amazon — with the urban crime rates to match its scale. Tourist areas like Florianópolis and the Pantanal are genuinely accessible; some Rio neighbourhoods are not.
Colombia
Cartagena, Medellín, and the Coffee Region have transformed into excellent solo travel destinations. Rural areas with FARC activity remain off-limits, but the main tourist circuit is accessible.
Guiana Shield
Guyana, Suriname, and Paraguay offer authentic experiences off the main tourist circuit. Low violent crime but limited infrastructure. English is strong in Guyana, making it the most accessible.
Venezuela
Political collapse and violent crime make Venezuela a destination to avoid. The situation has not meaningfully improved and independent solo travel is not advisable.
