The Indian Ministry of Health issued a new circular on June 2 2026 requiring yellow fever vaccination certificates for every international arrival. The requirement takes effect September 1 and covers all nationalities including transit passengers. Certificates must be dated at least 10 days prior to arrival.
Airports in Delhi Mumbai and Bengaluru have installed dedicated verification counters. Travelers without valid certificates face quarantine of up to six days at designated facilities. The policy aligns India with WHO recommendations for countries with Aedes mosquito presence.
India previously applied the rule only to arrivals from endemic zones in Africa and South America. Rising global case numbers prompted the universal extension according to internal health ministry documents.
Over 85 million international passengers arrived in India in 2025. Vaccination coverage in source markets has increased steadily since 2023.
What this means for you
Obtain the yellow fever vaccine at least 10 days before departure from an approved clinic and carry the original certificate. Check the WHO list of approved vaccination centers in your country. Upload a scanned copy to airline check-in systems where supported.
Confirm requirements again 72 hours before travel as enforcement details may be refined. Avoid last-minute bookings if vaccination appointments are limited in your area.
The rule is expected to remain in place for at least two years with possible digital certificate integration by 2028.
